System to be tested initially by eight project participants
The National Library of Finland has concluded an agreement with the Ex Libris Group regarding the implementation of the customer interface for the National Digital Library project. Besides supplying the system required for the interface, the Ex Libris Group will also develop and customize the interface in cooperation with the National Library of Finland and other organizations participating in the project.
The project was implemented as a competitive negotiation process in which CSC – IT Center for Science Ltd served as a consultant. Ex Libris’s Primo software most successfully met the system’s functional and technical requirements.
At the same time, the system’s testing phase, in which eight organizations are assessing factors such as the system’s search functionalities, the integration of electronic services, and the interface’s usability, was initialized. After testing, the system will be also expanded to include the materials and services of other libraries, archives, and museums. As planned, the public interface will be available to end users in 2011.
Compared to the present situation, the integrated public interface will make it easier to use the services of libraries, archives, and museums. The new public interfacewill enable users to, for example, search for and reserve books, search and view works of art, examine documents, and read scientific publications. The extensive and diversified entity will provide new possibilities for anyone requiring information or seeking the experiences these organizations offer.
The customer interface is part of the Ministry of Education and Culture’s National Digital Library project that will improve the availability and long-term preservation of digitized materials at libraries, archives and museums. The tools developed in the project will also be used to aggregateFinnish materials for Europeana, the European Digital Library.
